Dr. Pauling, who in …
Dr. Pauling, who in his lifetime made very solid contributions to the field of medicine, nevertheless latched onto an oversimplistic view of vitamin C in his later years.
Vitamin C in a petri dish kills cancer cells. He jumped to the conclusion that high doses would do the same thing in humans. That hypothesis has not worked out in human trials.
Dr. Pauling himself died of prostate cancer, despite his heavy vitamin C consumption.

The Merck Manual …
The Merck Manual says that a toxic dose of Vitamin C is 2000 mg/day. That’s a ball park number, of course, and will vary by individual.
Vitamins are best obtained in foods, not in supplements. Eat fresh fruits every day and you’ll get better results.

There is a legal …
There is a legal requirement for vendors to deliver what is listed on the label.
But I’ve never heard of any government litigation against violators in the supplement industry. Nor of any government-sponsored testing of supplements for safety and label conformance.
I don’t know everything the Government does, of course. But I would be surprised if they are doing much in this area. Testing is expensive, and we’ve had antiregulatory types running things for a long time.

your right about …
your right about the standardization thing as far as active ingredients becoming inactive… it’s like that with resveratrol. The only standard extracts that I take and trust are american ginseng and ginkgo only because most studies show those extracts to be more effective. The govt does enforce what’s put on the facts label, ie- If the “supplement facts” say 30% gypenosides in jiaogulan (aerial), those gypenosides have to legally be there at the time of manufacturing and more than 30% too

Thanks for …
Thanks for contributing here, Dave.
There are a couple of things to keep in mind. The first is that there is no such thing as a standardized dose for supplements. We’re flying blind. The second is that there are few, if any, quality standards which apply to supplements, and no government enforcement. The active ingredients may not be active by the time they’re done with manufacturing.
Thus taking supplements is always experimental, and results may not be what we hope for.

great thoughts! …
great thoughts! I’ve never heard of pantethene. My top 4 supplements that I suggest- cod liver oil, american ginseng (extract 10% ginsenocides 200mg tablet 1x daily), ginkgo biloba (extract 60mg 2-3x daily), and trace minerals tablets either Concentrace trace mineral tablets or montmorillonite clay tablets which has been studied by nasa. The nasa scientists discovered that the clay tablets prevented the astronauts from getting arthritis from being in space which was common for astronauts to get

Hard, hard question …
Hard, hard question.
The best answer I can give you is do the best you can until you’re out on your own and can take full control over your diet.
It will help if you are allowed to control your own food spending, either from income you generate, or from an allowance, or a combination. You might try to negotiate a deal along those lines.
A poor diet can do a lot of bad things. But pain in legs, feet and back suggests something more to me. See a doctor, ok? Get it checked out.

I am 17, I want to …
I am 17, I want to eat healthy but my parent is stubborn and tries to but still brings home donuts and things that I really don’t want. I try to tell her that these things I simply wont eat but then she tells me that I am wasting money. I feel exhausted and have pain in my legs and feet along with my back and I am only 17. I am not over weight bu would like to be fit. But I am simply “addicted” to fatty and unhealthy foods. What is your suggestion to this?

A really good …
A really good herbal tea is rooibos, from South Africa. Delicious when sweetened with stevia, it has no caffeine, and it’s said to have more antioxidants than even green tea.
I also like lots of other herbal teas, such as peppermint and chamomile. My pantry is crammed with different varieties.

Don’t expect …
Don’t expect miracles. And don’t overdo it. Green tea contains caffeine – which is a carcinogen.
I limit myself to about 3 tea-bags of green tea per week. The rest is herbal teas.
All things in moderation. Drinking gallons of green tea is not a quick fix.

If you are …
If you are minimizing fat in diet, *and* taking Xenical, your body may not be getting enough healthy fats. That can make you desperately ill. It’s especially dangerous for a vegetarian who is not getting fats from animal sources.
Focus first on eating healthy and using nutritious foods to control cravings. Then work on easing slightly down on calories – but don’t hurry it, or cravings will start to snowball. And be active! Exercise flips metabolic switches that you need to flip.

Good question!
I’m …
Good question!
I’m under the impression that flooding your digestive tract with water at meal time isn’t a good thing. It can interfere with absorption of some nutrients.
A better tactic is to eat slowly. This lets your body turn off hunger signals with a lesser amount of food. As for water, drink plenty! But I think it’s best to do that between meals.

Any drug that …
Any drug that blocks nutrient absorption is a tough sell to me. It’s better to choose healthy, necessary nutrients in the first place than to eat bad foods and block their absorption with drugs.
Xenical has a relatively small effect on body mass, and studies show that as soon as you cease taking it, you will gain weight again.
My instincts tell me it’s not the way to go.

I don’t want to …
I don’t want to second-guess your naturopath. I’m not qualified to do that.
I will encourage you to read up on all the ingredients in anything you’re asked to take. Use Google and perhaps Wikipedia.
Being skeptical of processed supplements doesn’t mean automatically rejecting them. It means informing ourselves and taking nothing for granted.
