Bowflex Selecttech 1090 Dumbbells Vs. 50 Lb Bayou Adjustable Dumbbells – An Unlikely Match?

Written by ama on July 26, 2010

You probably wouldn't expect to see a match-up between these adjustable dumbbells, since they have a 40 pound difference in weight capacity. They are quite different everything from appearance to performance, but that doesn't mean that they aren't stiff competitors for the attention of at-home lifters.

With it's very affordable price tag, it's hard to beat the adjustable Bayou dumbbell.  For heavier lifting, however, the Bowflex SelectTech 1090 is the preferred device.

Bowflex Selecttech 1090 dumbbells adjust from 10 pounds to 90 pounds in 5 pound increments. They are nicely crafted with a stylish pattern, and colored black with red highlights. A very user-friendly turn knob offers the user quick adjustment between the 5-pound weight settings.

Yet, there are some downfalls to using these dumbbells:

You have to by them one at a time, and just one Bowflex SelectTech 1090 is HIGHER PRICED than an entire set from MOST other companies.
2. They can feel bulky and more difficult to control for some users, especially those not used to lifting heavier dumbbells.
The handle is rather uncomfortable, as the metal can cut into your hand.

Despite a unique design and thousands of satisfied users, there is room for the Bayou adjustable dumbbells to steal the show. Priced substantially less, you can actually get TWO for UNDER the price of a single Bowflex SelectTech 1090!  If wanted, you can buy just one Bayou dumbbell, too. They are very stylish in their own right, with polished chrome over a very sturdy metal construction.

Although the Bayou product does not offer a weight high enough for some heavy lifters, they are quite durable, and put together very well.  They provide weights from 10 pounds to 50 pounds, and are very reasonably priced. Some downfalls with the Bayou adjustable dumbbells are that the company is not as well-known, lighter max weight, and the design is not as creative. It may also take more time to switch between weights using these.

Some consumers find Bowflex hands down the way to go while others value the bargain purchase that comes with Bayou. If you're willing to compromise on a few details, like 40 less pounds, then then very affordable Bayou dumbbells may be for you.

If you still can't decide, and can afford to go with the Bowflex, thousands of satisfied owners may be on to something.  But you still get a VERY DURABLE and AFFORDABLE product with the Bayou. So if you don't need 40 additional pounds, and are willing to forgo some of the other details, then the affordable Bayou set looks pretty good.

One thing is certain - you will be amazed with the speed with which you can adjust weight if you purchase the Bowflex SelectTech 1090, never skipping a beat in your exercise routine. So whether you chose the heavier weights, quick adjustments, and sleek black and red of the Bowflex, or instead, you opt for the far less expensive, well-built Bayou, you ARE getting a quality product either way!
