American Cellular Labs had two supplements: Tren Xtreme and Mass Xtreme. Both contained man made steroids... and I believe have been taken off the market. The supplements were big for highschool football players. This was as recent as July 23, 2009... so yes, some players might not be lying.
I've taken plenty of over the counter stuff that would be considered illegal now... Andro, Ripped Fuel(tons of other fat burners) and many others.
