Unfortunately the vast majority of supplements are complete scams. Even the ones that ARE worthwhile are way over-hyped, so you but a bottle or a tub of something thinking you're going to get superhuman-gains and it doesn't happen.
What I've found DOES work that IS worthwhile are your basic protein powders and weight gainers. I've never found any success whatsoever with creatine. I've never noticed enhanced recovery or gains with glutamine. I question whether brain chained amino acids (BCAA) help to build muscle or help you to drop fat when you're dieting. Pre-workout drinks ARE effective for an energy boost, but so is drinking strong coffee or taking a caffeine tablet...it's cheaper too.
As for pro-hormones or pro-steroids, I've never been much of a fan. I did run some superdrol but the side-effects were so bad that I ended up abandoning the stuff. I absolutely could not sleep when I was on superdrol but I felt ridiculously tired. My sleep pattern was so screwed up that I ditched the stuff. What is extra-ridiculous about the pro-hormones/pro-steroids stuff is, first of all they are expensive, they come with the same host of side effects that illegal anabolics have, sometimes the side effects are worse, they are all orals so they tax the hell out of your liver...and finally from most reports they aren't as effective as illegal anabolics. This is not to say that you should use anything illegal, It's just ironic that we've got potentially dangerous stuff on the market OTC that is just as dangerous and not as effective as the real (illegal) deal.
Even if you were on the real deal, building muscle requires a great deal of dedication. You need to hit the heavy compound lifts and eat like an animal. You should be squatting, benching, deadlifting, overhead pressing, rowing etc. and getting 1 gram of protein per pound of bodyweight. If you're in your teenage years or early to mid-20's you should see remarkable gains by just doing those things. I know it sucks but it's a long hard road either way.

I ain`t no supplement ho and I actually don`t recommend using any supplements on a regular basis besides protein powder, fish and in the winter time Vitamin D3. But there are certain scenarios where other supplements can help you out...if you use them right. I`m going to outline today my thoughts on creatine, the most popular muscle building supplement out there.
Creatine for increased work capacity
Creatine is one of the most misunderstood supplements to take. Its not a steroid. Creatine is found naturally in your body. Real creatine does increase your work capacity, and can assist in gaining more strength and lean muscle mass over time. It ain't no wonder supplement and is actually found naturally in things like beef. The bottom line is if you don't have your regular eating in order and training regularly, it ain't going to make you grow a third arm, I'd only recommend it to intermediate lifters.
For those lifters, the key is creatine monohydrate for somewhere reputable like a micronized German creatine. I would recommend 3-5 grams post-workout.
Now those with liver problems, gut problems or any other medicial problems should stay away from creatine.
Should YOU use creatine? If you are training consistently, seeing results, and already have a solid foundation. Do I currently supplement with creatine? No and thats because my nutrition is DIALED in.
Remember you can't supplement a training routine and poor diet with a wonder supplement. And see the article in the description for more info. Besides my favourite white powder is cocaine. Seriously.
